A. A. (Gus) Etchegary - Builder

Gus Etchegary was born at St. Lawrence, May 28, 1924, where he received his education.

He played soccer with Burin from 1945 to 1950 and with St. Lawrence from 1951 to 1952, back again with Burin from 1953 to 1959.

As a ‘builder’ he was outstanding, and made a tremendous contribution to sport. From 1964 to 1968, he was President of the St. John’s Football League. At that time the St. John’s League was going through a rough period, but under the leadership of Gus, a first-class job was done and the league flourished once again.

He held executive positions on the Burin Peninsula Athletic Association and was President of the Newfoundland Soccer Association from 1966 to 1971.

Gus was Newfoundland’s representative in the Canadian Soccer Association and one of its Vice-Presidents.

Under his leadership, the Newfoundland Soccer Association came of age and gained new status on the national scene as witnessed in Challenge Cup Games and in last summer’s World Cup presentation.

Gus is President of Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Limited, Vice-President – Fisheries Products Ltd., Commissioner – International Commission of North West Atlantic Fisheries, and Director – Fishery Council of Canada.

Gus has shown tremendous leadership capabilities coupled with dedication and exemplary conduct. He is well deserving of Hall of Fame recognition.
