Ben Munden – Athlete

Ben Munden, a native from Port aux Basques, dominated Badminton at the Provincial level from 1968-69 to 1986-87. He also starred at the Atlantic, National and International levels. At the Provincial level, Ben has won 47 open singles, 38 open doubles and 30 open mixed double championships. Within this total he has won 20 triple crown. Ben was named Provincial Badminton Player of the Year on seven separate occasions.

At the Atlantic level, Ben won a number of singles and doubles. In 1974-75 he captured a gold medal in Men’s Doubles and in 1985-86, a gold medal in Men’s Singles and Doubles. He also was a Triple Crown Gold winner in 1986-87 and 1987-88.

At the National level Ben represented the Province at the Canadian National Badminton Championships for 13 consecutive years (1974-75 to 1987-88). He won the Gold Medal in men’s singles at the championships in 1985-86.

In International competition, Ben won a gold medal in mixed doubles at the United States Masters Open Championship in 1985-86. In 1986-87 – a gold medal in singles and doubles and in 1987-88 – gold medal in men’s singles.

Ben was inducted into the Newfoundland Badminton Hall of Fame in 1991. He has the reputation of being a first rate sports man and has been a model for numerous young badminton players throughout the Province. Many of his achievements will be difficult to surpass or even equalled in the foreseeable future.
