Corner Brook West Sports Club (Monarchs) was established in 1959 – 60 to promote Amateur Athletics on the West Side District area between Corner Brook Stream and Crow Hill in the City of Corner Brook. The first Association was made up of Executives from the various sport teams from the Corner Brook West Area. In 1959-60 Hockey was the main leader of the Association. Soccer and Baseball joined in 1961 followed by Basketball in 1965 and Broomball in 1966.
Over the past 30 years, the Corner Brook West Sports Club has fulfilled all of its objectives, of which the main one was fostering, promoting and improving Amateur Athletics in the City of Corner Brook. The Club was the leader and mover for the building blocks that led to the formation of the Corner Brook Minor Baseball Assoc., West Side Monarchs, Corner Brook Athlete of the Year Committee, Corner Brook Community Playgrounds and Scholarship Program.
Corner Brook West Sports Club sponsored male/female players and teams as well as programs for the elderly. The Club continues through the years to raise money for numerous teams and help local players participate in National Competitions.
In 1982, the Corner Brook West Sports Club acquired its own building – Palace Theatre on Broadway – which became their major fundraising facility. Over the past 30 years, the teams sponsored by the Club have achieved great success on the Local level, capturing many City and League titles. Many of these teams have represented Corner Brook in Provincial play. Teams wearing the Monarchs colors have received over $175,000 from the club. Another $75,000 has been donated to other volunteer groups.
In 1988, in honor of the Calgary Winter Olympics, the Corner Brook West Sports Club was awarded a Canada Celebration ’88 medal. This medal was awarded for continuous years of service to the community. The Corner Brook West Sports Club has outlived other sports clubs in Corner Brook due mainly to the dedication and strength of its members. At present, 9 teams are sponsored in various sports within the City.
The Corner Brook West Sports Club has been instrumental in building sport in Corner Brook and is very deserving of the honor of being inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
