Cyril G. Power – Athlete

Cyril Power was born in St. John’s in 1924. In the annals of sport in Newfoundland there are few athletes who have shown such versatility over so wide a spectrum of sports participation or have attained such success in athletic accomplishment than Cyril Power.

Cyril first came to prominence for his athletic ability while a Junior at St. Bonaventure’s College as a member of the school’s championship hockey and soccer teams of 1938, 1939 and 1940. His proficiency as a hockey player was such that while still a Junior he was selected as a member of the Senior Inter-Collegiate Team. He contributed significantly to St. Bon’s championship successes in Senior Inter-Collegiate competition in 1939 and 1940.

While still at school his marked ability as an athlete of all-round potential became clear when in 1940 he was named Victor Ludorum at St. Bon’s for his proficiency and versatility as a track and field star. Leaving school in 1940 he began a lengthy and distinguished association with St. Bon’s senior teams in hockey, basketball, baseball and track and field.

He was a member of St. Bon’s Boyle Trophy team from 1944 to 1950 and then again in 1955. For six of these years he was captain of the team. Simultaneously he participated as a member of the St. Bon’s team who captured the Herder Memorial Trophy from 1944 to 1949. In total he played in seven Provincial Hockey championships. While Cyril enjoyed an exceptional hockey career he also excelled on the baseball diamond. He played on championship teams in the St. John’s Senior Baseball League from 1947 to 1950 and in 1949 was a member of the St. John’s All-Star Championship team.

Cyril’s prominence in sports such as soccer, track and field, basketball are supported by numerous championships and awards over a period of ten years. His recorded achievements reveal that he excelled in every discipline in which he participated. Locally he was regarded as one of the most outstanding athletes of his generation.
