Dr. David Cecil Johnston, one of the most outstanding and colourful athletes of his time, was born at Placentia, December 3rd, 1903.
He received his early education at the Methodist College here in St. John’s and starred in hockey and football in the Inter-Collegiate League with the M.C. team. Sometime later he attended Pictou Academy and while at this school in Nova Scotia, he played with his school team in rugby and hockey.
In 1924 he entered Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he took a prominent part in athletics, concentrating in track meets, running against such internationally famous athletes as Phil Edwards of McGill University. Dave also played senior Inter-Collegiate hockey for Queen’s University.
In 1930 he interned at Kingston General Hospital and was a member of the Medicine Executive in 1931.
After his graduation he returned home and spent his internship at the General Hospital. At this time he was a member of the Guard’s Track Team and was always a consistent points winner.
He won the Victor Ludorum on several occasions at the Highland Games, and M.G.A.A. sports on St. George’s Field.
Dave played with the Guards Baseball team, and was with them when they won the championship for several years. He also was an oarsman and footballer.
Dr. Dave Johnston was a general favourite and his quiet and unaffected manner made him a host of friends. He died January 8th, 1938.
A place in the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame he richly deserves.
