Dr. Yves LeGal - Athlete/Builder

It was in early 1969 that judo really became established within the province.

Dr. LeGal has been President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association since 1969 and was a National Councillor of Judo Canada, for 13 years. He is presently serving his third term as Vice-President of the National Organization. A member of the Olympic Selection Committee for four years, he was an official at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and has been a National Referee since 1971.

In 1973, Dr. LeGal was Assistant Coach of Canada’s Youth team when it spent three weeks of intensive training and competition with other international team members in Munich, Germany.

In 1974, he was coach of the Canadian University Judo team when it competed at the international inter-collegiate Judo Tournament in Michigan State University.

He has been the Chairman of Canadian University Judo since 1972, a member of the National Grading Board since 1978, the Chairman of Research and Testing of the Canadian Judo elite athlete since 1981 and a member of the Organization’s Medical Committee since 1979.

He participated in all Canadian championships from 1957 to 1968 as a competitor and has participated in all national championships from 1969 to 1982 either as a coach or a referee.

Dr. LeGal has coached Newfoundland Judo teams in four Canada Winter Games. He is also very much involved with coaching of the Memorial University Judo team since 1969. The varsity team won the Atlantic Inter-collegiate Judo Championships every year from 1970 to 1975.
