Born in Ferryland in 1915, educated at Bishop Feild College, Grand Bank Academy, and Memorial University, Fred moved to Grand Bank after the Second World War. He had been active in sport in St. John’s, particularly basketball and as Secretary of the St. John’s League from 1939 to 1945. The move to Grand Bank was the commencement of a magnificent contribution, not only to Grand Bank, but to the entire Burin Peninsula. He revived the Grand Bank Athletic Association and served as its President for 27 years. Improved sports facilities soon became evident under his leadership. Several Burin Peninsula and Provincial championships were won and in 1974, Fred’s final year as President, his soccer club won the right to represent the Province in the Canadian Cup playdowns. He was a key figure in the formation of the Burin Peninsula Amateur Athletic Association. He was Vice President of this Association for three years, President for 24 years, and is still the immediate past president. He served the Provincial Soccer Association, as Vice President for five years, President for five years, as well as a tenure as Secretary Treasurer. Since 1974, he has held the office of Treasurer of the Provincial Association. Fred has been Vice President of the Newfoundland Amateur Sports Federation and a Director until 1975.
As Mayor of Grand Bank, he represented Newfoundland at the National Fitness Council, 1973-75. He has been honoured by being presented with the Order of Canada.
