Iain R. Tennent – Athlete

Iain Tennent was an outstanding swimmer whose records still stand today. He holds a total of 32 Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial records ? 17 in Short Course and 15 in Long Course ? in various age categories. Tennent achieved great success at the Atlantic Universities Athletics Association (AUAA) level. In 1991-1992, he was named AUAA and University of New Brunswick (UNB) Rookie of the Year. UNB were the AUAA champions in 1992, 1993, and 1994, with Tennent earning four gold medals at each of these championships. In 1992-1993, Tennent was named both AUAA and UNB Swimmer of the Year. He was named AUAA Swimmer of the Year again in 1997. In 1993, at the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) Championships, Tennent captured three bronze medals and was named 1993 CIAU All Canadian. That same year, he was the recipient of the Victor Davis Memorial Award, given to promising, high performance Canadian amateur swimmers to assist them to continue their training, education, and pursuit of excellence at the international level of competition. Four years later, he earned one gold (100 fly), two silver (50 fly, 100 free), and one bronze (50 free) at the 1997 CIAU Championships, all UNB and AUAA records. Also in 1997, Tennent was named 1997 CIAU All Canadian. Tennent competed at three Canada Games, earning a gold medal in the 100 free and a silver medal in the 100 fly at the 1993 Canada Games. He was a Youth Nationals finalist in 1990 and an Olympic trials finalist in 1992 and 2000. At the 1992 Canadian Nationals, he was awarded a silver medal for the 50 fly. At the international level, Tennent was a member of the Canadian Junior Swim Team which competed in the ‘8 Nations Cup’ in France in 1991. Other provincial accomplishments for Tennent include the 1993 Newfoundland Unisys Quest for Excellence Award, 1993 Provincial Athlete of the Year, and St. John’s Athlete of the Year.
