Keith Taylor - Builder

Keith Taylor’s contribution to the Newfoundland sports community is long-standing and deep rooted. He was an extremely active administrator and/or coach in five different sports. His most publicized accomplishments were in Volleyball but he was also a key developer and promoter for Orienteering, Track and Field (Cross Country), Canoeing and Cross Country Skiing.

He coached Memorial University’s Men’s Volleyball Team from 1966-1980 and 1982-1984. In 1984 he was named Coach of the Year for the Atlantic Universities Athletic Association (A.U.A.A.). In 1968 Taylor organized volleyball matches between a Czechoslovakian Club Team and Memorial and an intersquad game between the Czechs and some national team players. In 1974 he arranged for an international calibre coach, Hiroshi Toyoda, from Japan to conduct a coaching clinic in Newfoundland.

From 1966-1970 Taylor was President of the Newfoundland Volleyball Association. For many years he served in various capacities with the Association. In 1983 he was named Coach of the Year by the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association and in 1988 he was made Honourary Life Member.

From 1962-1974 Taylor was Chair of Cross Country Running in the Amateur Athletic Union. He was a coach of the Cross Country Team from 1967-1975.

Keith Taylor was also a key force behind the establishment of Orienteering in St. John’s. He served on the St. John’s executive in 1981 and from 1984-1991. He was President during 1984 and 1985. He served as provincial registrar in 1981.

His love for outdoor sports was further realized in his contributions in canoeing and cross country skiing. He was President of the St. John’s Canoe Club from 1987-1991 and served as a Director of the Newfoundland Canoeing Association from 1985-1989. Taylor was a cross country ski instructor for several years with the Jack Rabbit Ski Program and Chaired the St. John’s Ski Club Touring Committee from 1976-1978.
