The first decade of the 1900’s has been recognized as the pioneer era for sport in Newfoundland. Cricket, football, hockey, running, and rowing, produced some of the finest athletes Newfoundland has ever seen. One star, which shone brightly in all those endeavours, was Nicholas “Nix” Vinnicombe. In hockey, as a goal keeper, his prowess was renowned, playing for city teams and against visiting Canadian teams. His name was the first one to be inscribed on the Boyle Trophy, in its first year of competition in 1904. It was also there in 1905 and 1907. His hockey career spanned the years 1899-1916, being on Championship teams in 1902, 1904, 1905, 1907, and 1909. He represented St. John’s with the team that travelled to Truro, Nova Scotia, in 1902 and again against Prince Edward Island in 1907, when the visitors to St. John’s were shut out 3-0. “Nix’s” outstanding performance in goal was the highlight of that game. He was a footballer of renown, playing with the “Star” Club, perennial champions. He later played with B.I.S., with the same ability and success. In rowing, he competed in Club Races, representing Star and B.I.S., amassing many victories. In cricket, he played with the Shamrocks and his feats were often recalled by the many followers of this traditional game.
“Nix” was a member of the Legislature, City Council, being Deputy Mayor in 1921. He served on the Regatta Committee for many years.
