Tommy Winter was born in St. John’s, February 17th, 1895. He received his education at Bishop Feild College and Kings College, Nova Scotia.
Tommy was a versatile athlete and participated in many sports. He played hockey with Bishop Feild Inter-Collegiate and Old Feildians championship teams. He also played football with the C.E.I. Club, Old Feildians and B.F.C. teams.
He won the Victor Ludorum while attending school at Feild in 1914.
Tommy was a member of the Bishop Feild College Inter-Collegiate rugby and cricket teams which won championships in 1910 and 1913. He played baseball with Cubs 1912 to 1914. While attending Kings College, he was captain of the hockey team and was president of Kings College Athletic Association. He was also awarded the medal for the best all-round athlete. He also took part in sprints and jumps. As a builder he made an outstanding contribution to tennis and figure skating.
In 1932 Mr. Winter organized, designed, and supervised the facilities for the Riverdale Tennis Club with which he has been associated to this day. He was its first President, is now its Honourary Life President and is still an active member. Mr. Winter was also active with the Newfoundland Lawn Tennis Association.
In 1934 Mr. Winter organized the St. John’s Figure Skating Club and was its most active supporter for many years. In 1936 he was elected Honourary Life President of that Club.
He was a distinguished citizen, sportsman, and organizer active in sport – “Tommy” Winter.
