Vi Pike – Athlete

Inducted October 31, 1986

Vi Pike, a native of Carbonear who has lived most of her life in Grand Falls, joins her husband, John, in the Hall of Fame as the first husband and wife to be elected.

Her outstanding record in ladies curling includes skip of six rinks that have represented Newfoundland in national championships and skip of 10 ladies teams that represented Newfoundland in senior national competitions. Her rinks won the provincial ladies championship in 1961, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1969, and 1970 with her provincial senior victories coming in 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1985.

In addition, she teamed up with her husband, John, on many mixed teams, including the one that won the provincial championship in 1967.

She was a member of the Canadian ladies contingent that toured Scotland in the Scottish curling tour of 1971.

As one of the province’s better lady golfers, she has been a member of 10 Newfoundland teams that have represented the province in national golf competitions at both the amateur and senior ladies levels. She has represented Newfoundland in curling and golf national championships in every province of Canada.

In both curling and golf, she has held a wide variety of responsible administrative positions and has devoted a great deal of time to coaching, particularly in curling. She was elected to the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in the athlete category in 1984 and to the recently formed Provincial Curling Hall of Fame in 1986.
