Sport Newfoundland and Labrador 2025 Provincial Annual Awards Finalists Announced

St. John’s, NL – Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SportNL) is proud to announce the finalists for the 2025 Sport NL Annual Provincial Awards, taking place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Delta Hotel St. John’s. This year’s celebration recognizes the extraordinary achievements and contributions of athletes, coaches, teams, officials, executives, and volunteers during a historic year for sport in our province, highlighted by St. John’s hosting the 2025 Canada Games. 

The 2025 awards honour a milestone season defined by excellence, leadership, and community impact across all levels of sport. 

“The 2025 season will be remembered as one of the most significant years in our province’s sporting history,” said Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Board President Raeleen Baggs. “From outstanding performances on the competition field to the incredible leadership behind the scenes, our finalists represent the very best of Newfoundland and Labrador sport. Congratulations to all nominees and finalists on their remarkable contributions.” 

Sport NL received a strong number of nominations across multiple categories, reflecting the depth of talent and dedication within the province’s sport system. 

“The energy and excellence demonstrated throughout 2025, particularly during the Canada Games, showcased the strength of our athletes, the professionalism of our coaches and officials, and the commitment of our volunteers and sport leaders,” said Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Executive Director Troy Croft. “Earning a nomination is an outstanding achievement. Being named a finalist in such a historic year is truly exceptional. We congratulate all finalists for their impact on sport in Newfoundland and Labrador.” 

Three finalists in each category were selected based on voting results from a committee representing the media and sport community. Finalist biographies are included in the accompanying backgrounder.

Junior Female Athlete of the Year (Margaret Davis Memorial Award) 

 

Falon McLoughlan – Volleyball 

Falon McLoughlan has distinguished herself as a high-achieving athlete, student, and community leader, demonstrating excellence across all areas of her life. A deaf volleyball player, she was selected to the Canadian Deaf Women’s National Team at just 14, becoming its youngest member. Falon earned a silver medal at the 2024 Pan-American Games in Canoas, Brazil, and competed at the 100th Deaflympics in Tokyo in 2025, where Team Canada achieved a historic 7th-place finish. She captured silver at the 2025 National Club Volleyball Championships and was named a 16U Provincial All-Star. Falon received numerous honors, including the Team Gushue Athletic & Academic Excellence Award and multiple municipal Athlete of the Year awards. Beyond competition, Falon is a dedicated volunteer and advocate, supporting athletes with hearing loss and coaching youth. Maintaining a 96 average, she leads by example and aspires to pursue medicine while continuing to represent Canada on the international stage. 

 

Isabelle Quinton – Kickboxing  

 In 2025, Isabelle Quinton established herself as a dominant multi-sport athlete, excelling in both kickboxing and rugby. Training with Warrior Elite Martial Arts, she competed internationally with the Canadian Junior All-Star Team and remained undefeated throughout the year. Isabelle captured two national titles, earned Best Junior Female Athlete at Canadian Nationals, and won both the North American Century Cup and Turkish Open World Cup. She was also named Junior Female Athlete of the Year by the Town of Conception Bay South. In rugby, Isabelle represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canada Games and other major competitions in Rugby 7s. In Rugby 15s, she co-captained Holy Spirit High School to a provincial championship and earned Team MVP honors at both the U17 and U19 Atlantic Championships, showcasing her leadership and versatility. 

 

Avery Strong – Ball Hockey 

Avery Strong’s 2025 season highlighted her as one of the province’s most versatile and accomplished multi-sport athletes, excelling in ball hockey, ice hockey, and soccer. Competing at elite levels locally, provincially, and nationally, Avery earned a silver medal at the Canadian National Ball Hockey Championship and was named to the National Championship All-Star Team . Her performance led to selection to Team Canada for the 2026 World Ball Hockey Championship in Sheffield, UK. In ice hockey with the U15AAA Eastern Icebreakers, Avery served as Assistant Captain and captured silver at the Atlantic Canada Championship, where she was named Top Defensive Player. In soccer, Avery claimed silver at the Atlantic Championship with Team Newfoundland and Labrador and earned multiple MVP and Top Midfielder awards, demonstrating outstanding all-around athletic excellence. 

 

Junior Male Athlete of the Year (Joseph P. Mullins Memorial Award) 

 

Gavin Baggs – Para Sport  

In 2025, Gavin Baggs established himself as one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s leading junior athletes, delivering outstanding performances on both national and international stages. At the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Baggs captured four medals for Team NL across multiple sports, including a gold in the men’s wheelchair 1500 m and silver medals in the wheelchair 100 m and 400 m track events as well as in the 400 m para freestyle swimming, becoming the host province’s first medalist of the Games and earning the honour of serving as flag bearer for the closing ceremony. Beyond the Canada Games, he was as a member of Team Canada’s Para ice hockey program, which captured a silver-medal  at the 2025 World Para Ice Hockey Championships, a silver medal at the IPH cup in Czechia and earning an invitation to the 2025 Paralympic Orientation Camp, highlighting his continued progression and potential at the highest level of international competition. 

 

Jared Picco – Softball  

Jared Picco enjoyed success on the Local, Provincial, National and International softball diamonds in 2025. On the Local level, Jared competed in the Senior and Intermediate Men’s Fastpitch Leagues. On the Provincial level, Jared participated in the U17 Men’s, Intermediate Men’s and Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championships, claiming a Silver Medal in the U17 event. On the National level, Jared represented the Province at the U17 Men’s, U20 Men’s, U23 Men’s and Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships, as well as at the Canada Games. Jared captured a Gold Medal at the Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship with Galway Hitmen and was named to the All-Star Team (Outfield) at both the U17 Men’s and U20 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships with Team NL. On the International level, Jared captured a Bronze Medal with Team Canada at the U18 Men’s Pan American Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. For his performance this past season, Jared was named the 2025 Softball NL Minor Male Player of the Year. 

 

Ben Veitch – Hockey  

Ben Veitch has enjoyed an exceptional season and proven himself as one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most accomplished young hockey players. A native of St. John’s, Ben was selected fifth overall in the 2025 QMJHL Draft by the Newfoundland Regiment, becoming the first player ever drafted in franchise historya landmark moment for hockey in the province. He now plays for the Regiment, contributing at the highest level in the QMJHL. Ben’s standout play at the 2025 QMJHL Cup earned him a spot on the Gatorade Team of the Tournament, highlighting his performance among the top prospects eligible for the QMJHL Entry Draft. Internationally, Ben represented Team Canada Red at the 2025 Under 17 World Hockey Challenge, where the squad captured gold, and he capped the championship victory with a crucial empty-net goal in the final. Ben has demonstrated leadership, elite play on both national and international stages, and historic accomplishments for Newfoundland and Labrador in his 2025 season. 

 

Senior Female Athlete of the Year (Elizabeth Swan Memorial Award) 

 

Kate Bazeley – Athletics 

Kate Bazeley delivered another outstanding season in 2025, continuing to establish herself as a leader in women’s long-distance running. Competing in the professional field at the Boston Marathon, she placed seventh among masters’ athletes, finishing in an impressive time of 2:39:33. 

On the local stage, Kate captured her ninth victory at the Tely 10, setting a new female course record of 53:42. She also delivered strong performances across Newfoundland races, running 26:10 at the Mews 8K—nearly surpassing her own record of 26:07—and winning the Paradise Five and Dime 10K in 34 minutes. Through consistent excellence at the national and local levels, Kate continues to demonstrate elite endurance, competitiveness, and dedication to the sport, reinforcing her status as one of the province’s premier distance runners. 

 

Molly Gill – Ball Hockey 

Molly delivered an exceptional year of performance, earning recognition among the very best in international ball hockey. She was selected to represent Team Canada at the U20 Women’s World Ball Hockey Championship in Poprad, Slovakia, where she helped secure a silver medal. Her outstanding impact on the global stage was further recognized when she was named ISBHF Player of the Year, an honour awarded to one of the top athletes in the world by the International Ball and Street Hockey Federation. At the national level, Molly also captured silver at the U23 CBHA Women’s Ball Hockey Championship in Mississauga, Ontario, and won gold at the Women’s Premier “A” Ball Hockey Championship. She continued to demonstrate leadership and excellence through multiple championship victories, MVP honors, and team titles across provincial, national, and international competitions, solidifying her reputation as a high-performing and influential athlete across sports. 

 

Jaida Lee – Baseball  

St. John’s native Jaida Lee continued to make history throughout the 2025 season, showcasing excellence at both the collegiate and national levels. Competing in junior varsity baseball with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Jaida also represented Team British Columbia at the 2025 Baseball Canada Senior Women’s National Championships. On the mound, she earned a win over Team Ontario, pitching five strong innings while allowing four hits, no earned runs, and striking out eight batters. She recorded a 1.2 WHIP during the tournament. At the plate, Jaida hit .364 with eight hits, 10 RBI, and an .875 OPS, helping lead Team BC to a gold medal. In recognition of her leadership and impact in sport, she received the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Jaida’s outstanding year concluded with her being selected 14th overall by New York in the first round of the Women’s Pro Baseball League Draft by New York. 

 

Senior Male Athlete of the Year (Ferd Hayward Memorial Award) 

 

Ryan Greene – Hockey  

Ryan Greene has enjoyed an exceptional and historic season, emerging as one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most accomplished athletes at the professional and university levels. A native of Paradise, Greene served as co-captain of the Boston University men’s hockey team during the 2024–25 season, posting career highs in goals, assists, and points while leading his squad to the NCAA Frozen Four and the national championship game — a testament to his leadership and high-level performance. Following the NCAA season, Greene made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks in April 2025, skating in a victory against the Montreal Canadiens and marking another milestone in his professional career. He has continued to contribute at the highest level, recording goals and assists while demonstrating skill, composure, and adaptability in the NHL. Ryan’s combination of leadership, elite performance at both the collegiate and professional levels, and his impact as one of the province’s top hockey players made him a standout athlete in 2025. 

 

Jason Hill – Softball  

Jason Hill of St. John’s had an outstanding 2025 season, excelling at the local, provincial, and national levels of competitive softball. Competing with 3 Cheers Pub Miller Lite, he helped lead the team to a first-place regular season record of 14-2-2, a St. John’s Day Tournament championship (4-0), and a playoff championship (6-0). Jason earned MVP honours for both the regular season and the St. John’s Day Tournament, while capturing the pitching Triple Crown with league-leading totals in wins (10), strikeouts (116), and earned run average (1.70). He was also named to the All-League Team as a pitcher and received Player of the Month honours in June and July. At the provincial level, he helped secure the Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championship. Nationally, Jason was a leader with the Galway Hitmen, who won gold at the Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship, where he was named an All-Star Infielder. He was named the 2025 Softball NL Senior Male Player of the Year. 

 

Chris Weeks – Swimming 

Chris Weeks delivered an exceptional 2024–25 season, establishing himself as one of Canada’s top sprint swimmers at the university, national, and international levels. He earned multiple podium finishes at major national championships, including silver medals at the Canadian Open and Speedo Canadian Swimming Championships, and placed fourth at Canadian Trials in long-course competition. At the university level, Chris dominated the AUS Championships, winning four gold medals, and was named the 2024–25 AUS Swimmer of the Year. He continued his success at the U SPORTS Swimming Championships, capturing silver in the 100 m freestyle and bronze in the 50 m butterfly. Internationally, Chris represented Canada at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany, advancing to the semifinals in both the 100 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly, finishing among the top 16 athletes in the world in each event. 

 

Female Coach of the Year 

 

Carmel Casey – Special Olympics 

In 2025, Dr. Carmel Casey exemplified coaching excellence through leadership, innovation, and international success. With 27 years of service to Special Olympics, she served as Head Coach for athletics, snowshoeing, and warrior fitness while also acting as President of the Gander Wings Club. Dr. Casey organized major provincial competitions, developed year-round training programs including Warrior Fitness and Run, Jump and Throw, and designed the high-performance training plans for two athletes who went on to medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Her commitment to athlete development, mentorship, and inclusive sport has had a lasting impact locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally. 

 

Duffy Earle – Swimming  

In 2025, Duffy Earle demonstrated outstanding leadership and coaching impact across all levels of competitive swimming. She consistently drove exceptional athlete performance while fostering an inclusive, high-performance environment. As Head Coach of the Mount Pearl Marlins Swim Club, she led significant program growth, tripling membership during her tenure, and guided swimmers to remarkable results, including 23 new club records, 11 Memorial University Seahawks records, and 15 Swimming NL provincial records. At the 2025 Canada Games, Duffy served as Head Coach of Team Newfoundland and Labrador, where her athletes achieved a 98% personal-best rate, recorded 24 finalist performances, and earned multiple national medals, including silver and bronze. Her leadership created a culture that balanced high-performance expectations with athlete development, allowing swimmers of all levels to excel on the national stage. As Swimming NL Technical Director and an NCCP Learning Facilitator, Duffy continues to advance coaching excellence and athlete development provincially and nationally. 

 

Devonne Ryan – Gymnastics 

Devonne Ryan exemplifies excellence in coaching through her unwavering commitment to athlete development, safety, and long-term success. Spending more than 16 hours per week in the gym, alongside countless competition weekends, she demonstrates dedication that directly supports the growth and performance of her athletes. Her leadership reflects a coaching philosophy centered on technical mastery, confidence-building, and holistic development. Devonne is widely respected across the country for her exceptional spotting ability, trusted by athletes and coaches during complex skill progressions. Known for her precision, strength, and technical expertise, she safely guides gymnasts through high-level and high-risk skills, enhancing both performance and confidence. Her specialized knowledge of uneven bars, grounded in biomechanics and skill construction, distinguishes her as a technical expert in the sport. Beyond coaching, Devonne holds a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology and contributes extensively to community initiatives and national sport development, including Canada Winter Games involvement. She is a true leader in gymnastics in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

 

Male Coach of the Year (John Drinkwater Memorial Award) 

 

Brian Casey – Hockey  

Brian Casey, a Grand-Falls Windsor native, has made a profound and lasting impact on hockey development in Newfoundland and Labrador through his work as a coach and leader at multiple levels of the sport. This season, he served as head coach of the Male U15 High Performance Program (HPP) team, guiding young athletes through elite competition and contributing directly to their growth, performance, and success. He also leads the Central Impact U18 program, where his guidance helps shape top-level youth players and prepares them for the next stages of their hockey careers. Brian’s extensive background in hockey within the province spans high-performance coaching, player development, and competitive success. His commitment to athlete development, strong leadership, and meaningful contributions to Hockey NL’s programs this season reflect his dedication to excellence in coaching and the positive impact he has made throughout the organization. 

 

Christopher Roberts – Swimming 

In 2025, Christopher Roberts delivered an exceptional coaching season, achieving unprecedented success across provincial, national, and international swimming competitions in Newfoundland and Labrador. His athletes earned podium finishes at Canadian national championships, set records at the AUS, Memorial University, and Swimming NL levels, and represented Canada internationally at the FISU Games, achieving a top 16 world placement. Under his leadership, swimmers broke 13 Swimming NL provincial records, qualified for Olympic Trials, Eastern Canadian Championships, and the Ontario Junior International Meet, and formed the majority of the province’s senior team. Chris also guided the Memorial University SeaHawks to a third-place finish at the AUS Championships, further demonstrating his impact at the university level. His program consistently produced national qualifiers, senior provincial team members, and internationally competitive athletes. Through sustained excellence and athlete development, Chris has elevated performance standards and strengthened high-performance swimming pathways across the province and beyond. 

 

Jake Stanford – Soccer  

In 2025, Jake Stanford delivered a historic season, further solidifying his legacy as one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most accomplished coaches. He led the Holy Cross Nutra Holdings teams to an extraordinary national double gold performance, capturing both the Jubilee Trophy Women’s National Championship and, hours later, the Challenge Cup National Championship. As a result, both teams earned places on the NLSA Honor Roll of Teams. Under Jake’s leadership, the Jubilee Trophy women secured their national title while extending their remarkable provincial championship streak to ten consecutive years. The Challenge Cup team also captured both provincial and national championships, completing a dominant season across competitions. Jake’s strategic game management, leadership, and commitment to team development were instrumental in his teams’ success. In recognition of his impact and results, he was named both Jubilee Trophy Coach of the Year and Challenge Cup Coach of the Year for 2025. 

 

 

Rising Star Coach of the Year 

 

Abby Evans – Soccer  

A notable athlete in her own right, Abby Evans has parlayed her natural leadership ability into a passion for coaching and empowering girls in sport. From her beginnings with her club’s micro program, Abby has taken on increasingly more challenges and responsibility, coaching various NLSA provincial teams and serving as Coach of the 2025 Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games girls’ team. After the Games in 2025, Abby returned to St. John’s Soccer Club in a part-time role as Grassroots Director. In this position, she is focused on creating positive soccer experiences for players, supporting and mentoring coaches, and aligning the club with Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards. Abby is currently enrolled in the Canada Soccer AccelerateHER B Diploma program and travels to Montreal to participate in the course. She hopes to coach at the university level in the near future, with a long-term dream of one day coaching at the national level. 

 

Maddi Healy – Baseball  

In 2025, St. John’s native Maddi Healy continued to make a significant impact within the Baseball NL High Performance Program as Head Coach of the 14U Team Burgundy. Leading a roster often composed of younger, less experienced players, she fostered a positive, development-focused environment that helped the team excel. Under her guidance, Team Burgundy captured a bronze medal at the 2025 Baseball Atlantic 14U Championships, marking their third consecutive podium finish. Competing against top teams from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, her squad consistently outperformed expectations, highlighting her strength in player development and leadership. In addition to on-field success, Maddi remained a key role model for emerging female coaches, using her platform to mentor and inspire the next generation while continuing to give back to the sport. 

 

Jayden St. Croix – Volleyball  

In 2025, Jayden St. Croix demonstrated outstanding coaching leadership across multiple teams, serving as head coach of the 15U Avalon Green Girls Club Team, the PWC Grade 9 Girls Team, and the Holy Trinity Varsity A Girls Team. His success was recognized with the 2025 NLVA Junior High Coach of the Year Award, reflecting his impact on athlete development and team performance. Jayden’s teams achieved exceptional results throughout the season, highlighted by a Tier 13 Gold Medal at Volleyball Canada Nationals — the highest-ranked 15U team from Newfoundland — along with NLVA Regionals Tier 1 Gold, NLVA 15U Club Provincials Tier 1 Gold, and multiple tournament championships, including the Smash Rising Stars Invitational and Gale Force Invitational. His teams also earned 18U B Division Gold while competing underage, secured 4A qualification, and captured additional podium finishes. Beyond team success, Jayden continues to expand his coaching expertise through professional development, private training sessions, and summer camp coaching, consistently building athlete confidence and skill at every level. 

 

Senior Male Team of the Year (Edward P. Browne Memorial Award) 

 

Deer Lake Red Wings – Hockey  

The Deer Lake Red Wings capped an exceptional 2025 season by winning the Herder Memorial Championship, sweeping the Clarenville Ford Caribous 4-0 in the final series to secure the provincial senior hockey title. The Red Wings’ performance in the best-of-seven championship was outstanding from start to finish, with a gripping triple-overtime victory in Game 1 setting the tone for the series. They followed that with wins of 3-1, 1-0, and 4-1 to complete the sweep and bring the Herder Memorial Trophy back to Deer Lake — a feat that underscores their dominant play and consistency throughout the playoffs. The Deer Lake Red Wings demonstrated a high level of skill, teamwork, and resilience throughout the 2025 championship run. Their sweep in the Herder final and the collective contributions of veteran players and coaching staff reflect the strength of senior hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

 

Galway Hitmen – Softball  

The Galway Hitmen delivered an exceptional team performance to capture the Gold Medal at the 2025 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Kitchener, Ontario (August 27–31). Finishing the tournament with a 9-2 record (.818 winning percentage), the team outscored opponents 48-25 (+23), posting a .267 team batting average (77-for-288) and a 2.24 team earned run average across 75 innings pitched. Their championship run was highlighted by three consecutive one-run victories on the final day, securing the province’s 10th national title. Team success was matched by individual recognition. Colin Walsh was named MVP of the Qualifying Round, Sean Cleary earned Top Player honours in the Championship Round, and Jason Hill was selected to the Tournament All-Star Team (Infield). Through balanced offence, strong pitching, and resilient play under pressure, the Galway Hitmen demonstrated depth, determination, and championship-level execution on the national stage. 

 

Holy Cross Challenge Cup – Soccer 

In 2025, the Holy Cross Men’s Team achieved a remarkable triple championship season, capturing two provincial titles along with the National Challenge Trophy Championship — the club’s first national title since 1988. Dominating local Challenge Cup competition, the team earned the Bobby Breen Award for finishing first in the regular season with a perfect 15-0 record, accumulating 45 points. They carried that momentum into the playoffs to secure the NL Challenge Cup Championship and later added the NL Cup Men’s Division title to complete their historic year. Their outstanding performance at every level of competition earned them recognition on the NLSA Honour Roll of Teams. Through consistent excellence, depth, and strong team play, Holy Cross established itself as a dominant force provincially and nationally, marking one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history and a milestone moment for the club.

Holy Cross Nutra Holdings – Soccer 

The Holy Cross Nutra Holdings Women’s Team delivered another dominant season in 2025, capturing their third national championship in four years, continuing their sustained excellence in Jubilee Trophy competition. The team went undefeated in the regular season, finishing with a 13-0-1 record for 40 points, with Holy Cross players occupying the top four scoring positions. They extended their remarkable run to ten consecutive provincial Jubilee Trophy championships before going on to win the 2025 Jubilee Cup National Championship in St. John’s in front of a home crowd. To conclude their historic season, the team also captured the inaugural NL Cup Women’s Championship, further demonstrating their depth and consistency. With success at the local, provincial, and national levels, Holy Cross once again established itself as a powerhouse program, showcasing strong team play, leadership, and championship performance throughout the year. 

 

NL United – Ball Hockey  

NL United has exemplified resilience and excellence, emerging as one of the premier programs in Women’s A Ball Hockey within the province. After building the foundation of their success through three early silver medal finishes, the program elevated its performance to new heights, capturing back-to-back Canada Ball Hockey Association Women’s A National Championships in 2024 and 2025. Through strong leadership, teamwork, and commitment to development, NL United established itself as a powerhouse on the national stage while also contributing key athletes to Team Canada. Their consecutive national titles reflect perseverance, program depth, and a culture of excellence built over time. From early challenges to championship success, NL United’s journey stands as a testament to dedication, growth, and sustained high-performance achievement in women’s ball hockey. 

 

 

Open Starlites – Skating  

The Mount Pearl–Paradise Open Starlites delivered a historic 2025 season, establishing themselves as the highest-scoring synchronized skating team in Canada. Comprised of 20 skaters aged 18 and over, the team became the only group nationally to surpass 100 points in a single program during the competitive year. Throughout the season, they demonstrated sustained excellence, winning all five events in which they competed. Their championship results included first-place finishes at the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championship, Synchro Series 2 in Ontario, the Elizabeth Swan Invitational in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Skate Canada Cup National Championships in Waterloo, and the Provincial Championships. They were also awarded the Fitzpatrick Feather Award for achieving the highest Grades of Execution at the Elizabeth Swan Invitational, recognizing exceptional precision and technical quality. Balancing demanding academic and professional commitments, the team exemplified discipline, teamwork, and elite performance, reflecting the highest standards of synchronized skating excellence. 

 

Youth Male Team of the Year  

 

13U AA Pasadena Pirates – Baseball  

The 13U AA Pasadena Pirates delivered an outstanding 2025 season, defined by competitive excellence, steady development, and strong community values. Built on homegrown talent and supported by dedicated volunteer coaches and families, the team embodies the spirit of grassroots baseball through teamwork, discipline, and commitment. In 2025, the Pirates captured their second consecutive provincial championship, earning another berth at the Atlantic Championships. Rising to the challenge, they secured back-to-back Atlantic titles, demonstrating consistency, resilience, and a strong team culture. At the Atlantic Championships, the Pirates showcased dominant performance and disciplined play, producing 177 plate appearances, 58 hits, 53 runs, and 47 RBIs, while maintaining strong plate discipline throughout the tournament. Their preparation and focus allowed them to perform at a high level under pressure. Beyond their results, the team is recognized for sportsmanship, integrity, and inclusivity, creating a positive environment where every player is valued and proud to represent their community. 

 

U15 High Performance Program Team NL – Hockey  

The Male U15 High Performance Program – Team NL delivered an extraordinary performance at the 28th Annual Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton, New Brunswick, capturing gold for the first time in program history. This championship run stands as a testament to the team’s exceptional competitive results, outstanding skill, and remarkable teamwork. After a hard-fought preliminary schedule, Team NL faced a pivotal semifinal matchup against Team PEI. In a thrilling display of resilience and determination, the squad overcame a deficit to mount a heroic comeback victory, showcasing grit, belief, and unrelenting effort when it mattered most. That win propelled the team into the gold medal final with full momentum. In the championship game, the Male U15 squad continued to demonstrate elite execution and team unity, ultimately defeating Hockey New Brunswick to secure the gold medal. This historic achievement marks the first gold medal for a Male U15 High Performance Program team from Newfoundland and Labrador at the Atlantic Challenge Cup, underscoring the strength of player development in the province and the commitment of coaches and support staff. 

 

 

Youth Female Team of the Year  

 

Team NL 14U Black – Baseball 

Team NL 14U Black delivered an exceptional performance at the 14U Atlantic Championships in Bedford, Nova Scotia, finishing the tournament undefeated with a 5-0 record and defeating Team Nova Scotia in the final. Their victory marked back-to-back Atlantic Championships for Team NL Black, underscoring the program’s continued excellence and consistency. Throughout the tournament, the team was dominant both offensively and defensively. Offensively, they outscored their opponents 27 to 6 and posted a team batting average of .293, showcasing disciplined and timely hitting. Defensively, they were just as strong, recording a team WHIP of 1.100, an ERA of 0.93, holding opponents to a .107 batting average, and striking out 69 batters over 30 innings pitched. Beyond their on-field success, Team NL 14U Black represented the province with professionalism, respect, and sportsmanship. Their strong character, teamwork, and conduct reflected positively on the program and highlighted not only their talent as athletes, but their integrity as individuals. 

 

Paradise Girls U17 – Soccer  

The Paradise U-17 Girls Team delivered a strong performance on the national stage, earning a fifth-place finish at the Canada Soccer U17 Cup, the national cub Championship. The team opened the tournament with excellent play and competitive momentum before narrowly missing medal contention in a penalty shootout against Prince Edward Island, who ultimately went on to win gold. Several players brought valuable experience from previous national competition, including the Canada Games, helping the team compete with confidence and composure at the highest level. Their leadership and familiarity with pressure situations strengthened the squad during national qualification and throughout the tournament. 

 

U15 AAA Eastern IceBreakers – Hockey  

The U15AAA Eastern IceBreakers delivered a strong and highly competitive performance at the 2025 U15 Female Atlantic Championship, finishing second overall after a hard-fought tournament against some of the best teams in Atlantic Canada. Throughout the event, the IceBreakers demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and resilience, playing with consistency and intensity against elite competition. Their balanced attack and disciplined defensive play helped them advance deep into the championship round, where they competed for the title and ultimately captured the silver medal. Standouts from the team were recognized with individual honours, including Most Valuable Player and top defensive accolades, highlighting both their talent and leadership on the ice. This impressive performance reflects the high level of commitment and development within the program and makes the U15AAA Eastern IceBreakers a deserving candidate for Youth Female Team of the Year.

Dave Dove – Skating 

In 2025, Dave exemplified fairness, integrity, and ethical leadership within the sport of figure skating. As a highly respected Level III Data Specialist — the highest designation within Skate Canada’s officiating pathway — he brought precision, neutrality, and professionalism to every competition he supported. With more than 40 years of volunteer service, Dave played a vital role in ensuring that events across Newfoundland and Labrador operated smoothly, overseeing registration, scoring, technology, and event management. His expertise and commitment helped guarantee that athletes were evaluated within a consistent and credible system, strengthening confidence among skaters, coaches, and officials. As Chair of the Officials and the Safe Sport Committee for Skate Canada NL in 2025, Dave championed respectful conduct, accountability, and athlete-centered decision-making. He approached complex matters with thoughtfulness and steady judgment, always prioritizing safety and long-term participant well-being. 

 

Norm Higdon – Swimming  

Throughout his distinguished officiating career, Norm Higdon has earned widespread respect within the swimming community for his professionalism, leadership, and integrity. More than 15 years ago, he achieved Level V certification — the highest level within swimming officiating — and was regularly appointed to major provincial and national competitions, where his experience and sound judgment were highly valued. His expertise also led to his appointment as Director of Officials with Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, where he played a key role in strengthening officiating standards and consistency across the province. In recognition of his exceptional service, Norm received the Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2025, his leadership was further honoured with the prestigious Paul Flaherty Volunteer Award for his contributions as Local Sport Lead for swimming at the Canada Games. Through decades of dedicated service, Norm has made a lasting and meaningful impact on the sport at every level. 

 

 

Kiana Laundry – Taekwondo 

In 2025, Kiana Laundry achieved a historic milestone for Taekwondo in Newfoundland and Labrador, becoming the province’s first and only International Referee after successfully completing the rigorous certification camp in Brussels, Belgium. Following four intensive days of written, scoring, physical, and ring management evaluations, she passed with distinction, marking a defining moment for the sport provincially. Beyond her international achievement, Kiana’s greatest impact lies in her dedication to developing Taekwondo across the province. Balancing work, school, and leadership roles as Referee Chair for Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Representative for Taekwondo Canada, she ensures athletes, coaches, and referees receive high-quality education. She organizes seminars, prepares resources, shares detailed presentations, and actively mentors officials. As an International Referee, she continues to balance global responsibilities with provincial commitments, strengthening the sport at every level through professionalism, leadership, and service. 

 

Junior Official of the Year Award 

 

Isabelle Crocker – Taekwondo  

In 2025, Isabelle Crocker distinguished herself as a dedicated and emerging leader within the Taekwondo officiating community. As a volunteer at the 2025 National Championships in Montreal, she contributed across multiple key areas, including inspection protocols, Poomsae calling, and computer operations, demonstrating both technical ability and a strong willingness to learn. Her performance at the national upgrade seminar in New Brunswick was exceptional, earning high praise from the Taekwondo Canada Referee Chair, along with the top mark on the written examination. As a result, she was selected to officiate at the 2026 National Championships in Halifax, further strengthening Newfoundland and Labrador’s presence at the national level. Isabelle consistently seeks opportunities for growth, attending provincial and national seminars, participating in online rule updates, and supporting junior referee development. Known for her leadership, professionalism, and balanced approach with athletes of all levels, she serves as a role model across the province. 

 

Lewis Holwell – Hockey  

Lewis Holwell has displayed excellent confidence on the ice in 2025 and his game control has benefitted greatly. Lewis has officiated numerous Level 4 games this season across all levels, from A to AAA. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to effectively work with and support younger officials. He communicates with them on and off the ice, pointing out areas of improvement for younger officials to work on to develop their game. This past season Lewis was selected to join Hockey NL’s High Performance Officiating Program where he attended a Regional Officiating Program of Excellence. After performing very well, he was selected to participate in a Development weekend with Hockey Canada’s Manager of Officiating Dan Hanomansingh, along with other Developing officials from within the Province. Lewis had a great season and has a very bright future ahead of him in Hockey NL’s Officiating Program. 

 

 

James Ryan – Baseball  

James was the gold standard for umpiring within St. John’s Minor Baseball for the 2025 Season. Over the course of the season, James worked all levels of house league and the metro all-star league 11U, 13U, 15U and 18U level as well as all-star for the levels in their respective metro league. James received positive reviews in both the 15U A Provincials as well as 15U AAA Provincials and umpired a number of house league playoff and medal games . James is an umpire that is respected and valued given his skillset and professionalism while on the field. Coaches and players love to see James arrive to the field knowing they are in for a great game before the first pitch is even thrown. He has patience in explaining situations and scenarios to both players and coaches who oftentimes benefit from what they have learned. 

 

Executive of the Year (Graham Snow Memorial Award) 

 

Kristyn Coley – Baseball  

Kristyn Coley has been a dedicated member of the Baseball NL Executive for nearly a decade, contributing to the growth and development of the sport at both the grassroots and national levels. She was named Chairperson of the Baseball Canada Female Committee, a committee established to promote awareness and provide education on women and girls’ baseball within the Baseball Canada membership. In this leadership role, she continues to strengthen opportunities for athletes, coaches, and administrators, supporting meaningful pathways for participation and advancement across the country. Through initiatives such as coach education clinics, Safe Sport policy development, Step Up to the Plate, Women in Baseball NL, and the Minor Provincials Team Ranking Process, Kristyn has helped build inclusive systems that enhance safety, participation, and competitive balance. Her leadership has contributed to sustained growth, stronger governance, and improved experiences for athletes and families throughout the province and beyond. 

 

Jesse DeVilla – Basketball  

Jesse Devilla has been a cornerstone of basketball governance in Newfoundland and Labrador from 2016–2025, serving as NLBA Finance Director/Treasurer and helping modernize the organization’s structure and operations. He led multiple five-year strategic planning processes for NLBA, guided planning for NABO, and supported the transition to NLBOC, ensuring stability during significant organizational change. Jesse also played a key role in strengthening integrity and governance frameworks, including helping establish the Basketball Integrity Committee, serving on hiring and transition committees, and participating on tribunals for complex disciplinary matters. As Finance Director, he transformed financial oversight by creating the organization’s first Finance and Audit Committee and introduced formal cash management, investment, and financial analysis tools to improve transparency and accountability. He has also contributed extensively as a tournament volunteer and commissioner. Through strategic leadership and lasting systems-building, Jesse has strengthened sustainability, governance, and long-term stability across basketball in the province. 

 

Steve Power – Ball Hockey  

Steve Power has played a key leadership role in strengthening and expanding ball hockey across Newfoundland and Labrador. Through his work with the Newfoundland and Labrador Ball Hockey Association (NLBHA), he has supported the growth of minor and community programs, helping promote registered youth leagues from U9 through U18 and ensuring sustainable player development pathways. His efforts also contribute to the organization and delivery of provincial championships and sanctioned competitions, creating structured opportunities for athletes, officials, and coaches to compete at high standards. As President of the NLBHA, Steve serves as the organization’s chief volunteer leader, guiding governance decisions, supporting the board and executive, and representing the province at national meetings to ensure Newfoundland and Labrador has a strong voice in the sport’s development. Under his leadership, 12 provincial teams competed at National Championships, with 11 returning home with medals — reflecting exceptional competitive success and provincial growth. 

 

Volunteer of the Year (Frank W. Graham Memorial Award) 

 

Susan Dean – Skating  

In 2025, Susan Dean continued her outstanding leadership and volunteer service to skating in Newfoundland and Labrador. Serving her second term as Vice Chairperson of Skate NL, she provided engaged, member-focused governance while supporting strong board practices and organizational growth. She contributes actively to the Finance, Skater Development and Awards Committees, and the Club Outreach Working Group, helping guide strategic development across the sport. As Branding and Production Chairperson for Skate Canada NL, Susan oversaw the production and live streaming of four Provincial Championships, delivering high-quality coverage to thousands of viewers. In 2025, she led the redesign of the Skate NL website, rebranded championship medals, launched the online store, and coordinated the Annual Awards Gala. She also supported national and Atlantic events and was reappointed Team Manager for the 2027 Canada Winter Games figure skating team, marking her third appointment in this role. Susan’s leadership continues to strengthen skating across the province. 

 

Michelle Healy – Baseball  

Michelle’s impact in 2025 reflects many years of dedicated service to baseball in Newfoundland and Labrador. At the local level, she volunteers with both St. John’s Minor Baseball and St. John’s Amateur Baseball, supporting a wide range of roles within each organization. Provincially, she serves as Program Manager for the 14U and 16U Female Programs, positions she has held for many years, helping guide athlete development and program operations across the province. In 2025, Michelle played a major leadership role in the Canada Summer Games. She served as Team Manager for the female team, coordinating travel, logistics, and preparation, and during the Games she acted as Venue Lead at St. Pats Ball Park, overseeing smooth operations throughout the event. Her extensive contributions were recognized nationally when she was named Baseball Canada Volunteer of the Year, honouring her long-standing commitment and lasting impact on the growth of the sport. 

 

Christa Skinner – Hockey 

Christa Skinner of Conception Bay South made a significant impact on female hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2025 through her leadership and volunteer commitment. As Eastern Zone Director on the Hockey NL Female Council, she helped shape policies and programming that support players, coaches, and volunteers across the province, advocating for continued growth and development at all levels. In 2025, Christa served as co-host chair for the U18 Women’s National Championship in Conception Bay South and Mount Pearl, helping deliver a professional, high-quality national event that inspired athletes and showcased the province. She also volunteered as Director of Operations for the Female U16 High Performance Program, overseeing team organization and standards. Under her leadership, the team earned a bronze medal at the Atlantic Challenge Cup, reflecting both competitive success and strong athlete development. Christa’s vision and dedication have had a lasting impact on female hockey in the province.
