Albert Martin was born in St. John’s January 9th, 1900. He was the son of William John and Ellen Martin. He was educated at Bishop Feild College, St. John’s.
Albert Martin was an outstanding athlete in the twenties. Every Wednesday afternoon in the summer a sports meet would be held at St. George’s Field, and Martin was a regular competitor. He was an excellent trackman and was an outstanding member of the Feildian Relay Team which was famous at that time. He played football, baseball, cricket and hockey. He also took part in tennis, golf and curling. In August, 1923 he won the Victor Ludorum at The Highland Games held in St. John’s.
In the business world he was outstanding. Chairman, Harmon Power Corporation; Newfoundland Steel Company Limited. He was awarded Commander of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He was Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel, Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Served with Royal Newfoundland Regiment 1916 to 1918. Member: Atlantic Development Board, Advisory Board Royal Trust Co. Director, Telephone Company Limited. Clubs: Member Canadian Society of Forestry Engineers; Chamber of Commerce; Canadian Club of New York; Canadian Legion of B.E.S.L; St. James Club, Montreal; Corner Brook Lions Club, Blomidon Country Club; Atlantic Salmon Association.
