James Hannaford – Athlete

Jim ‘Bucky’ Hannaford was born in Grand Falls. During his athletic career, he starred in hockey and baseball. As a dynamic forward, he was a sensational goal scorer, being the first provincial senior player to accumulate 300 points and having more than 200 goals to his credit when he completed his career in the early 1960s.

He was also given a tryout in the 1950-51 season by New York Rangers farm team in Quebec City. Hannaford won two Grand Falls senior league scoring championships and was twice named most valuable player in the senior league.

In provincial hockey he was one of the Grand Falls Andcos top players and played on six teams that won the Newfoundland senior championship.

An all-star every year he played baseball in Grand Falls. Hannaford was an outstanding pitcher who could also hit the ball well.

In his rookie season he was the Grand Falls Senior Baseball League’s top pitcher and led the league in strikeouts. He also played with the first Grand Falls team that won the town’s first provincial senior baseball title in 1957.
