Jack Reardigan’s athletic career spanned 40 years within hockey as he played for 21 and refereed for 19. His accomplishments include five Herder Memorial Trophies as provincial champion, eight Crawford Trophies as Avalon Peninsula champion, 13 Boyle Trophies as St. John’s champion and 13 Tobin Tie Cups for first place in St. John’s senior hockey. As a referee he officiated at all levels of hockey including exhibition games involving the Russian national team. He filled a variety of hockey executive positions.
Besides serving on the St. John’s Regatta Committee for 20 years in executive positions, including president, he was an outstanding oarsman for 12 years. He rowed in 32 races finishing first on 12 occasions, second ten times, third in seven events and fourth in the other three. He coxswained for three years.
As a long distance race walker he defeated Ferd Hayward in the ten mile event in 1946 and placed second to Hayward in 1947. He was cross-country skiing champion in 1939 and runner-up in 1940. Mr. Reardigan’s contributions to amateur sport include a wide range of executive positions within the Atlantic Rowing Association, Rowing Newfoundland, the Newfoundland and Labrador Amateur Sports Federation, the St. John’s Trotting Park and the Avalon Consolidated School minor hockey program.
Postscript
In 1992, Jack Reardigan was a recipient of the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation, which honours Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, to their community or to Canada.
