Roger Howse – Builder

Inducted November 4, 1988

Roger Howse, born in Grand Falls in 1930, was an outstanding athlete as well as being an individual who made many and varied contributions to the athletic and community life in his home town and province. Hockey and baseball were his main sports during his early years, with badminton and tennis added during recent times.

As a builder, he was the driving force behind the establishment of minor hockey on a provincial level and provided the leadership that had Grand Falls boast of a minor hockey setup second to none in Canada. From 1966 to 1970, he headed provincial minor hockey during its most important years and organized the Grand Falls Minor Hockey Association.

He is a life member of the Grand Falls Minor Hockey Association and was awarded the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association plaque for outstanding service to minor hockey in 1970. He served on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the Grand Falls Recreation Commission, coached senior baseball for ten years as well as coaching hockey and serving on golf and badminton executives.

He played ten years of Grand Falls and provincial senior baseball winning three MVP awards provincially as well as two Grand Falls MVP selections and two batting titles. A member of the Provincial Baseball Hall of Fame, he played three years of provincial senior hockey with Grand Falls, was a top softball player from 1959 to 1976, won the men’s and mixed doubles Grand Falls tennis titles in 1985 and was been one of the top Grand Falls badminton players for 15 years.
