Frank W. Graham – Builder

Inducted November 2, 1985

Frank W. Graham was born in St. John’s and is best known for his contribution to the Newfoundland Sports Archives. Since 1974, when the Archives were established, he has volunteered his services as curator and has worked on a daily full-time basis in organizing, collecting and receiving artifacts and memorabilia associated with Newfoundland sports history.

He has been responsible for putting together a vast collection of photos, trophies and written and printed materials associated with the history of sports within the province. This collection has been very valuable to a very large number of students and researchers at the high school and university levels in the preparation of thesis and various papers on sports related topics.

Graham was one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame, serving as honorary secretary on either the Selection Committee or the Board of Governors for nine years. During this time he was responsible for a large percentage of the nominations that resulted in builders and athletes being voted into the Hall of Fame.

His hockey career with St. Bon’s stretched from inter-collegiate in 1924 to senior in 1933. He was a member of five Boyle Trophy championship teams and twice was a member of a St. John’s team that played against St. Francis University squads. He played soccer from 1924 to 1931 and participated in several other projects within sports during the 1930’s. During recent years he has been an ardent golfer and an award winning sports fisherman.

In 1979 he wrote a book entitled “We Love Thee Newfoundland” about former Newfoundland Governor Sir Cavendish Boyle. It included extensive coverage of the history of the Boyle Trophy.
