Terry Young - Athlete

Terry Young, a native of Corner Brook, participated in powerlifting, wrestling, soccer and rugby. In powerlifting he excelled at the Provincial, National and International levels throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. Terry is a nine time Canadian Champion.

Terry finished second at the 1985 “Sport Aid” Strong Man contest in England and captured a silver medal at the 1987 Pan-Am Games.

Terry has held numerous National records in the squat, deadlift and total in the 10 year period, 1977-1987. He still holds the National deadlift record of 705 lbs in the 275 lbs open category and the National Master’s records for the 275lb class.

Terry retired from open competition in 1989. In October of this year Terry won the World Masters Powerlifting competition.

As a wrestler, Terry was captain of the MUN team for four years, 1972-76, and he was undefeated in the AUAA Intercollegiate conference for five years, 1972-77. His last year was with Dalhousie, where he earned as M.SC. degree in Sport Sciences.

He was active as a wrestler in Newfoundland and Atlantic Championships in 1969-93. Terry won numerous championships in Newfoundland and the Atlantic during those years.

As a rugby player, Terry played with the Newfoundland team 1975-76 capturing Atlantic Championships both years. He also played with Dalhousie, the Nova Scotia Intercollegiate champions.

As a soccer player, Terry played senior soccer in the West Coast Leagues from 1970-1982.

As a pioneer of powerlifting in Newfoundland and his other athletic accomplishments, Terry is well deserving of his induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
