Doug Squires had a distinguished athletic career as a baseball and hockey player both with the Feildian Double Blues and the St. John’s Capitals.
Doug rose to prominence in the early 1950’s when he played on the famed line of Duffett-Squires-Breen which catapulted him to hockey fame in St. John’s. He won a scoring championship in 1956-1957 and that same year was a member of the St. John’s Caps Team that won the Veitch Memorial Championship for Junior Hockey Supremacy in the Province. In 1957-1958, he won the most valuable player award with the Feildian Junior Hockey Club. He was a member of two Herder Memorial Hockey Championship Teams and leading scorer on the St. John’s Caps when they won the Herder Championship in 1970. In 1999, in a poll carried out by The Evening Telegram, he was voted one of the all time best forwards to play Provincial Senior Hockey. No small feat when the league was supported by a steady stream of exceptional semi-professional players from outside the Province.
In baseball, Doug Squires was one of the preeminent defensive catchers in the Province during his playing days as a member of the Feildians and St. John’s Capital Baseball Teams. A clutch hitter, he played on two Feildian Junior Championship Teams, four Feildian Senior Championship Teams, two Provincial Junior Championship Teams with St. John’s Capitals and five Provincial Senior Championship Teams as a member of the St. John’s Capitals.
His coach, Charlie Riddle, described him as an unselfish player and a tremendous team player who possessed leadership qualities through his quiet demeanor on the field of play. Indeed, a strong endorsement of one of our premier athletes. Doug Squires was the ultimate team player and his leadership skills had much to do with the success of numerous championship teams on which he performed. His superlative career merits induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
