Grand Falls native Allan (Al) Dwyer Jr. enjoyed tremendous success in hockey and baseball at the Provincial and National levels. Al’s hockey career began in the early 1950’s as a minor player in Grand Falls Minor Hockey Association. While in junior, he played for the Grand Falls Junior Jays – Provincial Champs in 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1963. In 1959 he broke into NAHA capturing Rookie of the Year honours. Al starred for 20 years with the Grand Falls Andcos and Cataracts, winning the Herder Memorial Championship in 1971 and 1972. Besides leading his team in scoring for 6 years, Al was also named the winner of the Howie Clouter Trophy in 1974 and 1975, as provincial hockey’s most sports minded player.
One of his most exciting moments as a player came in 1960 when he was invited to try out with Hamilton Red Wings – farm team of the Detroit Red Wings.
In baseball, Al was a standout both at the plate and on the mound in the Grand Falls Senior League for 15 years. Al was a member of the Grand Falls Braves team that captured the provincial junior championship in 1959. In 1970 he was named top batter and top pitcher. In 1971 and 1972 he won the Bucky Hannaford Trophy as Grand Falls Senior Baseball League MVP.
In 1988 Al was inducted into Newfoundland Amateur Baseball Association Hall of Fame. Al’s talent, energy and love for the game along with his constant sportsmanship make Al Dwyer Jr. a very worthy candidate for induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
