When Ted Gillies decided to hang up the skates in 1960, it marked the end of one of the most electrifying athletic careers in Newfoundland sports.
Born in St. John’s and now living in Florida, Gillies was an outstanding performer in just about every sport in which he played during his career. Performing mainly for St. Bon’s and St. John’s teams, Gillies was a dedicated athlete who believed in strict training and clean living.
In track and field his specialities were the 100 and 200-yard dashes and the high jump. He held the Newfoundland record for the 220 for several years.
His speed made him a constant scoring threat in hockey and he played on 14 Boyle Trophy championship teams.
Gillies won numerous individual awards but his career highlights were being named St. John’s Athlete of the Year, two consecutive years, 1952 and 1953.
He was an all-star outfielder in baseball, establishing himself as a sure-gloved, power-hitting player.
As an outside forward in soccer, his great speed again made him one of the game’s top scorers.
He also starred in hockey and track and field while attending Loyola College in Montreal.
