Pamela Yetman – Athlete

Pam Yetman is one of the most outstanding athletes this province has ever produced. She excelled in an era when female sports was just beginning to grow. Her dominance can be easily recognized when you learn that she participated in three Canada Games, twice in field hockey and once in basketball. Pam attended Memorial University of Newfoundland and represented MUN in an unbelievable three varsity sports, including field hockey, volleyball, and badminton. Pam also represented Newfoundland and Labrador in a total of five different sports including volleyball, softball, field hockey, badminton, and basketball. In volleyball, Pam attended 12 national championships representing Newfoundland and Labrador. She was the first Newfoundland athlete invited to try out for the Canadian Volleyball Team. Pam played varsity volleyball from 1969 – 1974 and was named to the conference all-star team for three of those years and named MVP in one year. Her varsity team captured the provincial title in four straight years 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974. In softball, Pam was always one of the top batters on the playing field. She played in six National Senior Championships from 1979 to 1985 and in 1994 she was elected to the Softball Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame. On the field hockey pitch, Pam represented our province at the 1969 and 1973 Canada Games and played on the MUN varsity team from 1969 to 1973. In 1971 MUN won the Atlantic Intercollegiate Field Hockey Championship. Pam played Canada Games basketball in 1971 and was a key member of the Bishops College High School basketball team that claimed four consecutive St. John’s and four provincial basketball titles. Pam represented Memorial University in Atlantic Intercollegiate badminton play, claiming several titles. In her handicap division, Pam won the Provincial Golf Championship in 1982. In 1968, 1969, and 1970 Pam rowed in the St. John’s Regatta. Pam was named St. John’s Athlete of the Year in 1970 and because she was such an ambassador for sport she was selected St. John’s Citizen of the Year in 1989. Pam’s distinguished and outstanding athletic career has earned her induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
