Ronald Tobin is considered to be the number one basketball player from Newfoundland and Labrador of all time.
In 1965 Tobin was named Most Valuable Player in the Irish Christian Brothers league while playing with St. Pats.
In 1972, he was named captain of the first Memorial University Men’s Basketball team to play and win an AUAA basketball game and to participate in the final four AUAA playoffs, while also being named the winner of the Outstanding College Athlete of America Award. During his university career he was the first Memorial University basketball player to receive the Richard Perry Memorial Award for Athlete of Year and was named to the Memorial University Athletic Honor Society.
In 1973 Tobin was the first Newfoundlander invited to the Men’s national team training camp in Winnipeg in preparation for the Montreal Olympics. Locally, Ron played 25 successful years of first division basketball in the St. John’s Basketball League and in 1999/2000 won both the St. John’s and Provincial first division championships.
During his career, Ron won many scoring titles, was named MVP in provincial and national tournaments, he was named defensive player of the year and named to numerous all-star teams. In 2002-2003 he was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame.
Ron Tobin was a complete player and an outstanding athlete, who has given much success to the sport of basketball in Newfoundland and Labrador.
