Inducted 2024

Darryl Williams was born in Labrador City and grew up playing minor hockey with Trinity Placentia and Mount Pearl, where he quickly built a reputation for his toughness, determination, and leadership on the ice.

In the 1990s, Darryl’s relentless work ethic propelled him into a professional career that included a stint in the NHL with Wayne Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings. Most of his playing years were spent in the American and International Hockey Leagues, skating with the New Haven Nighthawks, Phoenix Roadrunners, Detroit Vipers, and the Long Beach IceDogs. Known for his rugged style of play and exceptional leadership, he often served as captain or assistant captain during his time on the ice.

After retiring in 1999, Williams transitioned into coaching, starting with the Long Beach IceDogs before moving on to positions in the American Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and eventually the National Hockey League. In 2008, he joined the Vancouver Canucks as an assistant coach under Alain Vigneault, later following him to the New York Rangers. Williams went on to share his passion and knowledge of the game as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers, marking his fourteenth season behind an NHL bench.

In 2017, Darryl was inducted into the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame – a fitting honour for a player, coach, and leader who has left a lasting mark on the game of hockey.
