Lorna Proudfoot’s journey began in 1968 at the Torbay Recreation Centre, where a recreational program sparked her passion for artistic swimming.

In 1971, she swam for Memorial University’s varsity team, and when the program ended, she founded the province’s first non-university competitive club at the Mundy Pond Pool. A year later, it merged with the university team and quickly grew to more than fifty athletes. Lorna organized water shows, competitions, and coached athletes for national events.

In 1981, Lorna joined the Board of Newfoundland and Labrador Artistic Swimming as Awards Chair. She became a certified judge and helped introduce the Canada Artistic Swimming’s Star Program for developing synchronized swimmers.

Advancing to a Level Three judge in 1987, Lorna officiated at national competitions while building her legal career with the Department of Justice and the House of Assembly. In 1999, as president of the Sea Stars club, she implemented a structured athlete development system and expanded local competition opportunities.

Elected president of the provincial board in 2005, Lorna led a major by-law update and introduced a lasting insurance program. In 2012, she joined the Canada Artistic Swimming Board of Directors, contributing to policy and governance.

Through her decades of leadership, officiating, and mentorship, Lorna Proudfoot has been instrumental in sustaining and growing artistic swimming in Newfoundland and Labrador.
